What does it mean?
P3417 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 3 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit/Open . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on and the cylinder deactivation feature disabled
- Noticeably higher fuel consumption because the engine never runs in reduced-cylinder mode
- Rough idle and vibration if cylinder 3 is left with its valve collapsed
- Ticking or clacking from the cylinder head area
- Misfire on cylinder 3 with related misfire codes
- Mild loss of throttle response
Likely causes
- Connector at the cylinder 3 solenoid not fully latched or backed out of the lock
- Broken control wire, or a terminal pulled loose inside the connector body
- Oil creeping up the solenoid harness and coating the terminals until contact is lost
- Open winding inside the deactivation solenoid
- Blown fuse or open supply feed to the valve lifter oil manifold assembly
- Damaged wiring in the under-manifold harness section, commonly disturbed during previous repairs
How to fix it
- Pull freeze frame and note whether the fault is present now or intermittent
- Disconnect the cylinder 3 solenoid and examine both connector halves for oil, corrosion and terminal push-back
- Measure the coil resistance at the solenoid pins; an infinite reading means an open winding
- Check continuity of the control wire from the module connector to the solenoid, and check the supply side with the key on
- Perform a wiggle test on the harness while monitoring resistance to reveal an intermittent break
- Inspect the fuse and any relay feeding the solenoid group
- Repair the wire or terminal, or fit a new solenoid, then command the output with the scan tool and confirm the circuit responds
