First step

Treat this as an oil supply and mechanical response issue first.

What does it mean?

P3414 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 2 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Performance . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) on, usually after the engine reaches full operating temperature
  • Rough running or vibration during the transition in and out of the reduced-cylinder mode
  • Distinct tick or clatter from the valve train that changes with engine load
  • Loss of power and poorer fuel economy than usual
  • Misfire felt on cylinder 2 under light load
  • The fault may come and go depending on oil temperature and oil level

Likely causes

  • Low engine oil level or oil that is overdue for a change; these systems are oil-pressure actuated and very sensitive to oil condition
  • Wrong oil viscosity for the engine, which slows or prevents solenoid response
  • Clogged oil feed passage, restricted screen or a sludged oil control valve
  • Sticking or worn switching lifter / roller finger follower on cylinder 2, so the valve does not lock or unlock
  • Slow or partially seized solenoid spool that responds late to the command
  • Low oil pressure caused by a worn pump, a stuck pressure control valve or excessive bearing clearance
  • Timing chain wear or valve train wear that shifts the mechanical response outside the expected window

How to fix it

  1. Check oil level, oil condition and the service interval before anything else; dirty or thin oil is the most common trigger
  2. Confirm the correct oil specification and viscosity was used at the last service
  3. Read live data and command the solenoid on and off with the scan tool while watching the response and any change in engine behaviour
  4. Measure actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge at idle and at raised rpm, hot
  5. Remove and inspect the solenoid and its screen for varnish, metal debris and sludge; clean or replace as needed
  6. Inspect the switching lifter and rocker assembly for cylinder 2 if the hydraulic side checks out
  7. After repair, complete an oil and filter change and confirm the code does not return over several full warm-up cycles
