First step

Isolate whether the short is inside the solenoid or in the harness.

What does it mean?

P3415 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 2 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit Low . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) on, frequently setting again immediately after a code clear
  • Exhaust valve control stays in its default position, so the engine feels flat and lazy
  • Rough idle and vibration, worse when the system tries to switch modes
  • Ticking or knocking noise from the top of the engine
  • Higher fuel consumption and possible misfire on cylinder 2
  • Some vehicles drop into limp mode and hold reduced power

Likely causes

  • Control wire shorted to ground where it passes over a sharp bracket edge or the cylinder head
  • Internally shorted solenoid winding that drags the circuit down
  • Coolant or oil sitting in the connector, creating a low-resistance path to the engine block
  • Pinched or crushed harness section, often after cover, manifold or valve train work
  • Module driver stuck in the on state, holding the output low
  • Poorly repaired splice or an aftermarket connection made in this circuit

How to fix it

  1. Scan for companion codes; several low-side codes on the same bank usually point at a shared harness or connector
  2. Unplug the cylinder 2 exhaust valve solenoid and see whether the code changes to an open circuit fault, which would clear the solenoid of blame
  3. With the solenoid and module both disconnected, measure resistance from the control wire to engine ground; a low reading confirms a short
  4. Inspect the harness along the head, the loom clips and any point where it crosses metal edges
  5. Measure the solenoid winding resistance and compare it with the matching solenoid on the other bank
  6. Repair or reroute the shorted section, or replace the solenoid if it tests shorted internally
  7. Clear the code, command the solenoid with the scan tool and confirm the circuit now switches normally
