First step

Start with continuity checks; an open circuit is almost always wiring or connector related.

What does it mean?

P3413 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 2 Exhaust Valve Control Circuit/Open . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) illuminated and the variable exhaust valve function locked out
  • Rough or uneven idle, sometimes with a pulsing exhaust note
  • Loss of top-end pull because the exhaust valve stays in one fixed state
  • Ticking from the cylinder head near cylinder 2 as the valve train runs in the default mode
  • Fuel consumption higher than normal and possible misfire on cylinder 2
  • Hesitation or a soft spot in the mid rpm range

Likely causes

  • Connector at the cylinder 2 exhaust valve solenoid unseated, loose or only partially latched
  • Control wire broken, pulled out of its terminal or chafed through against the head
  • Corroded or oil-contaminated terminals; oil migrating up the solenoid harness leaves a film that acts like an open
  • Open winding inside the exhaust valve control solenoid
  • Blown fuse or failed relay in the supply feed shared by the valve control solenoids
  • Damage to the section of internal engine harness that runs beneath the intake manifold, often after previous engine work

How to fix it

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and check whether the fault is currently present or only appears when hot
  2. Unplug the cylinder 2 exhaust valve solenoid and inspect both halves of the connector for oil, corrosion and pushed-back terminals
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance across its two pins; an infinite reading confirms an open coil
  4. Check continuity of the control wire from the module connector through to the solenoid connector
  5. Verify battery voltage is present at the supply side of the connector with the key on
  6. Wiggle the harness while watching live data or an ohmmeter to catch an intermittent break
  7. Repair the broken wire or terminal, or replace the solenoid; recheck with the system commanded on and off through the scan tool
