What does it mean?

B1419 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: SIS (Side Impact Sensor) Rear-Passenger Defect .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp on permanently with the restraint system inhibited on that side
  • Rear right curtain and side airbag will not deploy in a collision
  • Code returns as current straight after being erased
  • Fault often appears together with damp carpet or a musty smell in the rear of the cabin
  • Driving, braking and all other systems remain normal

Likely causes

  • Failure of the sensing element or the electronics inside the sensor body
  • Moisture reaching the sensor after a leaking rear window seal, door membrane or boot area
  • Sensor damaged by a previous side impact, even one that did not trigger deployment
  • Reused sensor from an accident vehicle, which many manufacturers consider single use after a crash
  • Corroded connector letting the sensor supply drop below its working threshold
  • Poor mounting to the pillar or sill, leaving the sensor loose and reading erratically
  • Faulty restraint control module channel evaluating that sensor

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect the battery and allow the specified reserve discharge time before touching the restraint wiring
  2. Test the battery and charging voltage first so a supply problem is not mistaken for a defective sensor
  3. Pull back the rear right sill or pillar trim and check for water ingress, then repair the leak before replacing anything
  4. Unplug the sensor and inspect both connector halves for corrosion, deformed terminals and a lock that is not fully home
  5. Verify the sensor is bolted tightly to clean bare metal at the correct torque
  6. Where the part number is shared, exchange it with the opposite side sensor to see whether the defect moves with the unit
  7. Install a new sensor of the specified part number, run any required configuration, clear the fault memory and confirm the warning lamp extinguishes
